Ratu Boko Palace is a pretentious palace complex that was built on 8th century. The building that can be told a pretentious at the era was built by the kinsman of Borobudur temple founder. Ratu Boko Palace that located on Mount Boko 195.75 above sea levels, width 160.898 meter square with coordinat 7.771°South latitude and  110.491°East longitude is on Samberwatu Village (Sambirejo Village) and Dawung Village (Bokoharjo Village) Prambanan, Sleman Regency, Jogyakarta. At Ratu Boko palace there are some archaeological heritages like Gapura Istana, Ruang Pembakaran, Pemandian and Statue. Some temples site surround Ratu Boko Palace spreads on the south side and the west of the mount. They are Ijo temple, Baron temple and Miri temple.

Ratu Boko Palace is a a pretentious building that built on Rakai Panangkaran reign, ancestry of Wangsa Syailendra. The palace that at the beginning had named Abhayagiri Vihara was built for seclusion and focused himself to the spiritual life. At this palac,e you can feel peace and also see the scenery of Yogyakart and Prambanan temple with Mount Merapi as background

This temple is divided by four parts i.e. middle, west, south east and east. The middle part involves main gate, yard, Pembakaran temple, pool, Berumpak stone and paseban. The south east part pendopo, balai-balai, three temple, pool and Keputren complex. Cave complex, Buddha statue and pool are on the east part. On the west consists of hills

The Structure of Ratu Boko Palace.

Main Gate
Consists of two doors at Pduraksa with a roof like Ratna and has function as main gate. The first door made from andesite stone but the floor and the wall stairs made of fine white limestone. The length of the first gate is 12 m, width 6,90 m and height 5.05 m and also has five doors.

Candi Pembakara and Sumur Suci
It made of andesite stone and has length 22.60 m, width 22.33 m and height 3.82 m. This temple is named pembakaran because at this place there are some burning ashes. The well has dimension 2.30 m and 1.80 m. The depth of well 2 m on dry season. At that time, the people used the water from Sumur Suci for religious ceremony at Pembakaran temple and the water from this well was believed bringing luck for everybody who used it. For Hindu adherents use the water from this well to celebrate Tawur Agung (the day before Nyepi) to purify themselves and restore natural harmony.

Consists of 2 batur. East Paseban has length 24.6 m, width 13.3. m and height 1.16 m. While West Paseban has length 24.42 m, width 13.34 m, and height 0.8 m. Both of Paseban was built face to face. It could not be known what the function of both paseban are. The name of Paseban is based on the palace analogy. Paseban is a waiting room for everybody who wants to meet king.

The gate has length 40.80 m, width 33.90 m and height 3,45 m. The base part and the roof is made from andesite stone but on the body it makes from fine limestone . There are two batur in the gate. The north batur has length 20.57 m, width 20.49 m and height 1,43 m. South batur called Pringgitan has length 20.50 m, width 7.04 m and height 1.51 m. Both batur is connected to the aisle that make from andesite.On the roof there are 24 umpak and 12 umpak at Pringgitan. Pendopo is a central building that has some pillars and walls. Those umpak has function as pillars’ pedestal make from wood. Because the pillars, wall and the roof made from the easily damaged likes wood and shingle, so no one of this building are durable. Only the pillars that make from the stone that still good while the other parts that made from wood has gone.

The pool complex is divided by two parts, north and south parts. Both parts are separated by the wall insulation and connected by a door. The north complex is square consists of seven pools (five big pools and two small pools) while on the south consists of 28 pools consist of 14 circle big pools and 13 circle small pools and 1 square pool

On the Ratu Boko temple site there are two caves. They are Goa Lanang and Goa Wadon (male cave and female cave). It called as Goa Wadon becase there is a relief that describe female genitals (Yoni symbol) on the entrance gate. The Yoni symbol usually completed with Lingga (the male penis) that considered as representation of Siwa at Hindu tenet. The unity of Yoni and Lingga are considered bringing fertility and welfare. This cave is predicted as a place to meditation at that time.

This place is connected with the local legend “keputren” (women area) consists of two andesite batur faces to the west. The south part has length 21.43 m, width 22.7 m and height 1.75 m. The batur that faces north has length 16.4 m, width 14.90 m and also made of andesite.

Ratu Boko is located on the plateau 3 km south of Prambanan. The hills has height 195.97 m above sea levels and the width is 160.898 meters square. From Ratu Boko temple site we can see the beauty of Prambanan and Mount Merapi as the background. The panorama of Jogjakarta downtown looked on the west. On the south we can see the beauty of thousand hills.

The history of Ratu Boko temple began from the Dutch name H.J. De Graff on 17th century. He wrote that the Europeans who came Java had informed that there was relics of ancient history. They explained that had been found the ruins of the palace building in Bokoharjo. Based on the history of Mataram Kuno on 8th century, Ratu Boko had used by Syailendra Dynasty (Rakai Panangkaran) far before Samaratungga King era (Borobudur founder) and Rakai Pikatan (Prambanan founder). While other history stated that Ratu Boko developed a ancient folklore of Java also said he had discovered the ruins of a palace at the time of entry of Hinduism exactly the place that is recorded by a Dutch But, the quote from the story of Mas Ngabehi Purbawidjaja on Serat Babad Kadhiri perhaps more clear describing the existence of Ratu Boko temple that full of mystic charm in it.

The other source from inscription of Abhayagiri Vihara on 792 M that found at Ratu Boko sites. On this inscription stated that the person name Tejahpernapane Panamkarana atau Rakai Panangkaran (746-784 M) and also stated a region of Vihara on the hill name Abhayagiri Vihara that has meaning “ the vihara on the hills that free from danger”. Rakai Panangkaran drew back as a king because he wanted spiritual serenity and focused on religious issues. One of them was built the vihara named Abhayagiri Vihara on 792 M. Rakai Panangkaran is a Buddhist so the vihara he built was Buddhist background. As a proof, there is a Dyani Buddha statue. The strange things there are also found Hindu unsure at Ratu Bko sites like Durga statue, Ganesha and Yoni.

In relation why Ratu Boko Palace ever called Abhayagiri because Rakai Panangkaran succeeded to breathes the spirit of the noble teachings into the joints of the local community at that time. His people has the noble character so the condition was safe, orderly and organized can be created on that place.

Ratu Boko Palac complex located on the right side/ South of Jl. Jogja – Soko 25 km east side of Jogyakarta. From Jogjakarta to Prambanan you must turn right to Boko hills almost 2 km. To enter the area of Ratu Boko Palace, the tourists can choose the main entrance in the front of wide parking area. But this route is wasting enough because must climb the high stairs. The other alternative is through back gate by rounded the hill region and through settlement. Although it rounded far enough, but the tourists can park their vehicles directly at inside yard.

Some Tips Visiting Ratu Boko Temple :

  1. Come on late afternoon no more 4 o’clock p.m.. The reason is the complex looks bright enough but it is not too long to see sunset. 
  2. Wear sandals orcomfortable shoes, clothes that absorb sweat 
  3. Bring book or magazine.The peaceful at Ratu Boko is suitable for you to sit relax and reading book. 
  4. Enjoy Ratu Boko with your closed friend because the nuance there will be more eminent. 
  5. If you go there too late and can not enter the Ratu Boko area, you can sit at the restaurants and enjoy the Indonesia and Yogyarta special food.

Route to Ratu Boko Temple
From Yogyakarta you can go by Trans Jogja bus to Prambanan bus station then continue the trip using motorcycle taxi to Ratu Boko temple.
If you go there by your car from Yogyakarta go to the direction to Solo. At the junction after the bridge of Opak river (before Prambanan temple) turn right t Jl. Raya Piyungan. Approximately 3 km you have on the hills where Ratu Boko temple stands.
