The Cumulus Gumuk Pasir Parangtritis

Geology Expert from National Development University (UPN) 'Veteran' Yogyakarta Prof. Bambang Prastistho explains why the existing sand dune in Parangtritis Beach is unique and feasible to be maintained. The process of formation of sand dunes was not detached from Mount Merapi.

According to him, the remaining material of Mount Merapi to the south coast is already in a dry condition. Then gather and form like a sand dune. Blowing wind from the southeast then lift the sand that seemed to form a hill on the shoreline. Plus the emergence of ocean waves from the inside and surface surfaces. The combination of mountains, the wind, ocean waves from below and beyond plus a hill is a perfect blend and not everywhere there. Plus the shape is also unique, namely 'barchan'.

When it rains, the water then hides under the sand dune. That is why even on the beach, there are still many freshwater wells.
