History of Tugu Jogja
This monument was built in 1756, a year after the founding of the Yogyakarta palace. Built by the first Sultan of Yogyakarta Sultan Hamengkubuwono I post "separation" of Mataram Islamic Kingdom into the Sultanate of Yogyakarta and Kasultanan Surakarta. The construction of this monument was done to commemorate the unity between the king (at that time the cast of mangkubumi) with the people against the Dutch Colonial.
Initially the shape of the monument was Golong-Gilig, its pole was cylindrical and its top was round-shaped, so it was called the Golong-Gilig Monument and had the meaning of a unity of creativity, taste and intention. In detail, the beginning of Tugu Jogja was built in the shape of a cylindrical pole conical upward, the bottom of which is a circular fence while the top is round.
The height of the monument building at first reached 25 meters. On 10 June 1867 or 4 Sapar year Ehe 1796 (ehe: the name of one year in the nest in the Javanese calendar) there was a devastating earthquake in the region of Yogyakarta so that the monument Golong-gilig was damaged. The quake also caused damages to the Taman Sari and many casualties. The disaster was according to Tjandra Sengkala "Obah Trusing Pitung Bumi" which is a note containing the meaning of the number 1796.
Led by Opzichter Van Waterstaat (Head of Public Works) JWS Van Brussel under the supervision of Pepatih Dalem Kanjeng Raden Adipati Danurejo V Tugu was renovated in 1889. After the renovation of the new monument was completed, inaugurated HB VII on October 3, 1889 or 7 Sapar 1819 Year Java.
The Dutch government renovated Tugu Jogja with a square shape with each side decorated with a kind of inscription showing who was involved in the renovation. Even worse on the monument was mentioned candra sengkala Wiwaraharja Manunggal Manggalaning Praja. Which in addition means the year 1819, also means the door to prosperity for the leaders of the State. Very far from the spirit implied in the old Tugu form.
The top of the monument was no longer round, but a pointed cone. The reshuffle of the building was actually a Dutch tactic to erode unity between the people and the king. However, seeing the struggle of the people and the king in Yogyakarta that followed thereafter, it could be seen that the effort was not successful. The height of the building also became lower, only as high as 15 meters or 10 meters lower than the original building. Since then, the monument is also called De Witt Paal or Tugu Pal Putih.
